MUDEM Refugee Support Centre is currently working to introduce a ‘Migrant Women Empowerment Program’ in Ireland. The project aims to promote equality in Ireland by encouraging migrant women into employment through mentoring and workshops.
We for Women is a virtual “hive”. This “hive” seeks both migrant women and Irish people to come together to work towards integrating unemployed migrant women into the labor force. The volunteers will assist these migrant women by equipping them with legal information, improving their social and professional skills, encouraging them and strengthening their english language through free mentoring and workshops.
We for Women matches migrant women with people in the Irish workforce. The two groups are referred to as mentees and mentors. Matching is based on the mentee’s (migrant woman) personal wishes. Anyone in Ireland can be a mentor in this “hive”.
Mentees benefit through 1-1 meetings at which they are on an equal standing with the mentors. The mentors provide access to their professional networks, provide appropriate advice regarding various subjects such as the english language, legal rights, job interviews, entrepreneurship etc.
On the other hand, mentors get to put their experience to new use and gain new perspectives on their own life and career. They are motivated to help their mentee integrate into the Irish workforce while also gaining knowledge and insights into the challenges of migrant women.
